First off let’s get to basics on what pH stands for, which is “power of Hydrogen”. Or “potential of Hydrogen” , we have all heard the phrase “pH balanced”, but what does that really mean?? Of course this sounds good for us but I want to know why. And let me tell you in doing some research, pH skincare is vitally important!!
Because skin is our largest organ continuously protecting us, functioning as a barrier against external contaminants. Clearly what cleansers and moisturizers we use are so very important to maintain our “acid mantle”.
pH Skincare Acidity versus Alkalinity
As mentioned above our skin utilizes an acid mantle as a first line of defense, which has a pH of 5.5 slightly acidic. According to Wikipedia “The acid mantle is a very fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of human skin acting as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin. Sebum is secreted by the sebaceous gland and when mixed with sweat becomes the acid mantle.“
Because most face soaps have a pH of 7 to 10 they are considered alkaline, thus disrupting our acid mantle. And most shower gels have a pH of 9 or 10. So while our skin may feel very clean we are not maintaining it properly.
Another big issue is the body lotions we use! As most of them are alkaline, being over the recommended 7 on the pH Scale. So I am finally realizing that I have been using the wrong products for years!!! For this reason I am very happy I found pH Balance Skincare!!
