Easy Meat Pies

easy meat pies

Without a doubt almost every nationality has some version for easy meat pies. And some of these recipes are centuries old. So today I want to share a very simple meat pie recipe. As every Middle Eastern country all claim a version of the pie as their own. Whether the Egyptians, Lebanese, Palestinians or Syrians these meat or spinach pies are popular. Along with numerous nuances with regional fillings and spices.

To be sure I love to entertain and am always on the lookout for easy appetizers. Likewise something not to filling or messy either. For this reason I love how adaptable and delicious these little pies are! And without a doubt all are lovely served with a true fine wine!!

Easy Meat Pies Ingredients

1 Tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive oil

1/2 cup finely chopped onion

Two pounds ground beef (80% lean)

2 cups shredded hash browns (thawed or grated fresh)

Two cups of Cheddar Cheese shredded

Seasoning-1 teaspoon each of Kosher salt, garlic powder, fresh ground black pepper

3 cans of Southern Homestyle Grands biscuits (16.3 ounce size)

1/4 cup flour to dust surface to roll out biscuits to 5″ diameters

4 Tablespoons melted butter to brush pies

Directions for Easy Meat Pies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, position racks in middle and top third of oven. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Heat oil in large frying pan, add onion and ground beef. Secondly, brown for about 6 minutes until no pink shows. Thirdly, drain excess liquid, then add hash browns, seasoning and cheddar cheese. Then stir well until combined add any additional seasoning to taste. Set aside.

Lastly, open the cans of biscuits separate, dust work surface with flour. Roll out each biscuit to 5″ diameter, place about a 1/4 cup of meat mixture in center and pull up 3 sides of the dough and pinch together to secure. Place filled biscuits on baking sheet, brush with melted butter and bake about 40 minutes. Enjoy!!

Appetizer or Entrée

Obviously depending on the size you make your meat pie it can be used as an appetizer. In this situation I will use crescent rolls as my dough of choice. They make a nice neat little triangle that are easy to handle and go with anything else you may want to serve.

Of course making it dinner you have options of making them bigger and serving it with a nice Lebanese salad. Such an easy and delicious salad. And the Lebanese call their little pies “fatayer”. Which they fill with spinach or swiss chard and various cheeses. Along with using lamb and different spices. Oh you can experiment with so many wonderful choices. Often they will roll out the dough like little pizzas and make them just how they like them. Just like a family make your favorite mini pizza night.
