Churro History

Of course I had never heard of a churro until I visited a neighborhood Mexican restaurant as a teenager many years ago. And it has been a favorite of mine ever since. At the time I had erroneously assumed it originated in Mexico. But in doing some research for the Churro Maker, I found that no one has actually pinned down it’s origins. As it turns out there are various theories about it’s history.

First off historians say it may be descended from a Chinese dough roll, called youtiao. Which is fried in oil and looks like two long breadsticks joined. This version was not sweet and not considered a desert. Some historians believe it was Portuguese explorers that brought this recipe back home and of course over the years was modified into a churro.

Second theory is that churros were invented by Spanish shepherds who fried a dough made of flour, salt and water (same base ingredients as youtiao). And over the years by adding eggs, butter, spices, became the churros of today. Maybe the distinctive shape was inspired by the ridged horns of the native Churra sheep.

Churro History is a Mystery

While the history of the churro is unclear, the tradition of dunking it into chocolate is not. Churros were introduced to South America during the Spanish Inquisition in the 1500s. When the Spanish returned to Europe with cacao, which was sweetened with sugar cane to make a thick hot chocolate that’s perfect for dipping your churro into!!
