Obviously growing up in the sixties I have fond childhood memories of the Saturday morning cartoon binge! As the television was our babysitter while Mom did laundry. And it was the only time we were allowed to watch more than two hours of TV in one sitting. All of us kids loved our Saturday mornings!! Yippee!! (afternoons not so much, chore time) So I was excited when I heard about a warehouse filled with Animation Cels for sale; from just about every cartoon I loved as a kid.
Clearly I never realized how much work went into creating a cartoon. As every cartoon is hand drawn on celluloid (aka cel) and it takes 24 cels to create one frame of film. Wow that is a very labor intensive endeavor!! Thank you very much. As a result of learning this my appreciation for these artists is immense and I am so happy to have the ability to collect some of this art history. Not only to enjoy it personally as art but also as an investment. Because each animation cel is original and unique. And the prices are so low now but as the inventories dwindle the value will appreciate.
Animation Cels as Wall Art
Once you purchase your selection of original Animation Cel Art, you want to be sure to frame it correctly to protect it. Because these celluloids were hand drawn with “gum-arabic paints” they are very sensitive to humidity and temperature. Also never display your art in direct sunlight. So always hang your framed cels away from a heat register and on an interior wall away from direct sunlight. After all these cels are one of a kind and and should be treated as an investment.
