No doubt about it I am writing this article for us Baby Boomers!!! Because I sure as heck had never heard about the Internet of Things also referred to as IoT for short, until recently. So I took it upon myself to do some research on behalf of our generation that did not grow up with computers in our classrooms. Or any of the “smart devices” that are now so everyday.
Furthermore you are using this technology without even realizing it. Because this latest technology connects low powered devices using LoRa. LoRa stands for Long Range Radio which is used for IoT networks. So if your pet has a collar you can track their whereabouts, or smart light bulbs, thermostats you control remotely, a Ring doorbell, the list goes on, you are using IoT.
Internet of Things Network
So how can these “things” communicate with each other? Every smart product or device is manufactured with unique identifiers (UIDs). By which they transfer data over a network that does not need Humans or Computer interaction. These smart or connected devices can communicate with each other using LoRa creating a “Mesh Network”.
This Mesh Network needs “hotspots” or “hubs” to expand the network. (Pictured above) And to assist in carrying this data to where it needs to be. By purchasing and using a Helium Hotspot you are in fact joining this Mesh Network. You are participating to help your community relay important data. Without big telecommunication companies involvement or expensive WiFi. Because participation consists solely of individuals this is called the “People’s Network”!! We the people create the mesh network!!
In contrast to this we all know we can ask “Alexa” questions and to do some things for us. But it connects to WiFi to work.

While I was doing research, some reports estimate that there are 30 Billion IoT devices globally. Currently using WiFi and cellular networks to connect. Because Helium Hotspots are being deployed in the US first to strengthen the infrastructure coast to coast. The true goal is to provide this network globally. Especially to countries with little or no infrastructure. By giving them this ability to connect without WiFi the possibilities to provide education and jobs are awesome!! Granted all of the information above is good news for us. But what is so great is how the data it gathers can help in so many ways. I read a newspaper article in which a study was launched on how to conserve water in Phoenix. By the time the study was complete it was 2 years old. If they had this technology the could have gotten this information in Real Time!!
Obviously having important data like this could prevent blackouts in cities, solve mass transportation problems etc. Communities would have valuable information in Real Time. Thus having the ability to foresee problems and find solutions.
No doubt the time for IoT is now, the uses are limitless. Along with the social benefits the Peoples Network has possibilities I cannot even fathom!! Certainly the advances in technology just in the last 5-10 years is astounding! By providing this extra layer of gathering data; this truly has capabilities yet to be implemented to help us in our everyday lives.
