Antoniou Cabernet Sauvignon
Because the Cabernet Sauvignon is one of America’s favorite red wines. I thought I would do a little research on the grape itself. Seems that the cabernet sauvignon grape was a happy accident. According to wine historians it was believed that a cross breeding occurred between the red Cabernet Franc grape and the white Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the 17th century*. As France has many famous wine regions, this particular cross bred grape thrived in Bordeaux. *(Researchers from UC Davis finally proved this out genetically in 1996)
Another great feature of this cross breeding is how Hardy and Durable the grape was. As some grapes are more difficult to grow and are more susceptible to disease and growing conditions. Thus making the cabernet sauvignon grape a thriving and hardy choice to plant in vineyards all across the globe. Which is why this grape rates in 8th place worldwide as established planted vines, bearing fruit for wine.
